Student Life Camp is the summer camp we are going to this summer, and here are some of the guidelines they have laid out for us…

SO WHEN YOU ARE PACKING… take into consideration… (this is straight from the site, don’t believe me, hit the link)

Stuff to Bring

  • A fantastic attitude and a desire to draw near to God
  • Casual clothing for three days (shorts that meet our standards and pants are acceptable for all meetings including worship)
  • $10 key deposit
  • Sheets, a blanket, a pillow, sleeping bag, etc.
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Beach towels for Water Day
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Spending money for snacks, T-shirts, CD’s, etc.
  • Alarm Clock
  • Watch
  • Bible, pen, notebook, etc.

Stuff NOT to Bring

  • Spaghetti strap tops or small tank tops
  • Tight clothes
  • “Short” shorts or skirts. (Stand with your arms by your side. If your finger-tips are touching your skin, your shorts or skirt should be longer for camp.)
  • Bikinis or two-piece bathing suits
  • Speedos
  • Radios, CD players, walkmans or video games
  • Tobacco, drugs, alcohol or weapons
  • Fireworks
  • Water balloons
  • Clothing with questionable sayings, slogans, etc.
And Gateway needs to add a few more…
  • No ipods
  • No cell phones
The reason we say no to both of these things, is because we want to promote community, and help you spend some time away from the busy-ness of life (aka all the noise… so cell phones and ipods). So in other words, they are a distraction and note, if they are spotted, they will be confiscated…
  • Only 1 piece bathing suits may be worn

A Love Worth Giving…. (Krysta’s thoughts…) June 10, 2008

Max Lucado is a christian author (from TX, might i add :) lol) and he has written this one book that I could go on for days about, its called, A Love Worth Giving, and if anyone is looking for something amazing to read this summer, pick this up… I thought that I could follow what I wrote about yesterday with a couple of things that Max Lucado talks about in his book. He opens the book with this… (its super powerful, so read it a few times…)

“GOD LOVES YOU. Personally. Passionately. Others have promised and Failed. But God has promised and succeeded. He loves you with an unfailing love. And His love-if you will let it- can fill you and leave you with a love worth giving.”

Have people you call your best friends ever said something behind your back and you found out about it? Has the boy or girl you are dating ever betrayed you? People hurt our feelings, they lie, and cheat and do things without even considering the consequences… you feeling unloved. Which doesn’t work, because we were created to love and be loved. For instance, hang with me here, my mom’s dog, Cody, she bought him for the sole purpose of loving him, and boy does that dog love her… Cody almost looks depressed when she is not at home, and when she gets home he follows her everywhere, sits with her, snuggles with her, plays with her and barks when there is an “intruder.” His purpose in life is to love my mom, and he does it well…

God loves you like that, well kind of, His love is even better, He is always there, He never leaves. He sits with you and listens to you. He holds you close when you need comfort, He laughs with you. And He protects you against all the hurt of this world. He loves you more than you can even imagine, its the best love story ever created, and He did it all just for YOU…

”God showed how much He loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love. It is not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” -1 John 4:9-10

Krysta here again:) Lets discuss about being Unbreakable… June 9, 2008

So I don’t know how many of you have seen movies by M. Night Shyamalan, but he is pretty much brilliant. Movies like; The Sixth Sense, and Signs are some of the greatest movies that have not only caused a mass confusion to the viewers but have also made movie history with his innovative ideas of what a movie should be. He has reshaped the way we look at movies altogether, we pay attention to the camera angles and the things the characters say and don’t say.

I was watching Unbreakable the other day, and at first I wasn’t impressed and then at the end you are able to put the whole puzzle of the movie together and I LOVE it!

Samuel L. Jackson’s character at the end of the movie is giving one of his last monologs and says this…

“Do you know what the scariest thing is? To not know your place in this world, to not know why you’re here.”

-And that made me start thinking… people really think and feel this… so if you are one of those people I wanted YOU to hear me, when I say this, “YOU are here for a purpose, God has created YOU for His big plan, YOU have been specifically created by a God that loves and wants to know YOU.”  … don’t believe me? read these, and then we can discuss…

  • Jeremiah 1:5  “Before I formed you in the womb I chose you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
  • Jeremiah 29:11  ”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
  • Psalm 139:13&14  ”For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Tuna Melt Recipe June 9, 2008

“BAM! Pick it up a notch.”

Thanks for that awesome intro Emeril. Today for lunch I had a delicious Tuna Melt from my favorite bagel place. I thought this might be a good time to enlighten those kiddies out there about to hit the college scene, on how to make your very own Tuna Melt.

Feel free to mass make this recipe, I mean you do need to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next week right? You think I’m joking, but seriously make everything in huge quantities that will last you a week at least.

Ingredients:

  • Multiple cans of Tuna. I prefer the ones in water versus oil. (Deal ALERT: Costco sells like 12 cans in one package for a good deal, remember MASS production is key.)
  • One jar of sweet pickle relish. (If you are a master chef, make your own relish with sweet gerkins. Now we’re cookin’ boys and girls.)
  • Mayonnaise. (If you want to ensure the freshman 15 use REAL mayonnaise not the low-fat pansy stuff.)
  • Sharp Cheddar cheese. Feel free to mix different cheeses for a variety of tastes through your week. (Helps to last on this stuff the needed 3x a day.)
  • Bagels or Texas Toast
  • Bonus taste: add a dash of ranch salad dressing. For real, its tizzight.

Instructions:

  1. Drain the tuna……….ALL of it. Drain that junx as much as you can, it’ll help the texture at the end.
  2. Mix in a substantial amount of mayonnaise and the dash of ranch. Use just enough to cover most of the tuna well.
  3. Throw in the relish, mix as much in as your liking. This adds texture and taste, use the juice too.
  4. Toast the bagel or texas toast. Heat up the oven to 350 degrees F.
  5. Put a layer of the mix on the pretoasted bagel and add the cheese. Thicker the better with the cheese in my opinion.
  6. Cook for about 15-20 minutes. Cheese should be bubbly.
  7. Serve with pretzels or better yet Cool Ranch Doritos.

I hope this recipe makes its way to your kitchen and then your stomach. Its helped me out of a few all nighters in my day. Mix it well and let it sit in the fridge for a day to make it nice and tender! Keep refrigerated once its all made.

Why did you do that? June 7, 2008

“All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD.” (Proverbs 16:2 NIV)

Let’s get right down to it. This whole Narrow Gate thing is really nifty and hip, but whats the bottom-line? Whats the point? We talked last Sunday about how the two gates that Matthew presents us can be viewed as decisions we make in our lives. The broad gate leads to destruction, while the narrow gate leads to life along with persecution. Regardless each gate leads to something, the gates are only a means to an end NOT the end in itself.

This verse in proverbs sheds even more light on the narrow gate. We see here that God weighs the motives of a man. Its not just about what you do, but also why you’re doing it. Is the right thing still the right thing if it’s done for the wrong reason? We can go through the motions a lot of times, but our hearts are still far from God.

This is the toughest of the tough! The reasons and motives behind why we do things are so deep and hidden from the outside world. You can fake it easily! I know because I do it a lot. Truly only God knows whats on our hearts and its not the norm to open up with people and tell them the actual reasons and convictions behind our actions and choices.

When you’re faced with your next narrow gate vs broad gate moment, take a step back and ask yourself: am I doing this because I really do want to glorify God and grow closer to Him?

I’ll leave you with one more verse: “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:3-5 NIV)

Hiyyoooooo, ’tis the Uber-tern here. I wanted to update this site and in doing so, update you guys on whats going on. I headed over to the Fairfax government center for the annual Fairfax Fair. It was a BLAST! Did any of you guys make it out this weekend for it?

I got to see “OK Go” in concert on Friday night and was pleased to be right up front. They were pretty entertaining and the crowd could easily get into the catchy, soft punk sounds. At one point the lead guitarist/vocalist through his guitar pick into the audience, and who do you think was there to snag it? Yours truly…….it was quite the moment.

I also walked away from the fair with a $25 gift certificate to Coastal Flats in Fairfax Corner. Saaawwweeeeettt. You’ll hear more about this and a great sermon from John on this coming Sunday.

The website is well under way to a big change. As was rumored earlier, the three Pro’s that Narrow Gate has enlisted are working hard. The new website will be or more like is at http://www.gatewayyouth.org

Oh snap thats easy to remember.

Hey everyone! Krysta here… and I know what you all are thinking, “Hallelujah they got a girl “on staff”!!!” I mean really, they needed someone to keep these two boys in line over here… :)

Well I hope that yall are enjoying everything that is happening on this site! Its awesome! I spent the morning learning about this blog and how to use it and then Spencer was like, “alright go for it.” Talk about being thrown into something :) lol…

I was babysitting yesterday and the two girls were watching So You Think You Can Dance, so I sat down to watch. If you have ever seen the show or even american idol, you know that there are 3 judges and a person gets up and basically tries their hardest to impress the judges, to be told “you are good enough”. Funny isn’t it?… We rely on other people to tell us if we are good enough… Do you feel like you do that? Do you feel like everyday you have pressures of people criticizing or judging you?

Are you going to cry? June 4, 2008

“There’s no crying in baseball!” It’s time for the softer side of the Uber-tern to be revealed. (tear) Everyone gather your pillows around and we’ll have a heart to heart.

The top (and only) three movies that I’ve ever cried while watching:

#3 — The Last Samurai.

  • Scene that tears did flow: Tom Cruise and Japanese co-star get shot by gatling gun and Japanese general of the enemy begins to cry and bow down in respect. (It didn’t help that the guy next to me in the theatre was of obvious Japanese background and let loose a stream of tears throughout the movie. It’s all his fault.)
#2 — Hoosiers.
  • Guilty Scene: When alcoholic father turned screw up assistant coach goes to rehab and is visited by his basketball player son. His apology is a man’s man tear-jerker.
#1 — Braveheart.
  • No surprise here: Ending scene when William Wallace sees his deceased wife in the crowd of faces as he holds true to his convictions to the grim end.
Now its your turn, what movies did you first cry at? Don’t hold back, just let it all out. (sniff sniff)
